Maruti Suzuki Jimny expected to launch in India According to a report recently surfaced on the internet, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is conducting a feasibility study to introduce Jimmy in the local market.
The off-roader, currently in its fourth generation in global markets since 2018, was showcased at the Auto Expo last February 2020 and attracted considerable attention from show-goers and media.
Last month, the country’s largest carmaker officially announced the introduction of India-made Maruti Suzuki Jimny to export to markets such as Colombia and Peru in South America.
MSIL Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) Shashank Srivastava said in an investor call that his company is “studying various aspects of marketing as long as if we can launch that vehicle in India”.
India will likely serve as a three-door Jimmy’s production center in markets in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
The latest Jimmy’s response received worldwide (mainly in Europe and Japan) is nothing short of overwhelming as the production base in Japan is certainly running at full capacity and India will obviously help meet the requirements.
When asked about the export versions the brand is looking at with Jimny, MSIL executive vice president corporate and government affairs Rahul Bharti said the Indo-Japanese producer needed to take some time and understand. It should be noted that MSIL is not currently exporting Jimmy to Europe due to regular changes in regulations.
Specialties around the India-specific five-door Jimmy have long existed. For performance, the 1.5-liter four-cylinder K15B mild-hybrid petrol engine produces a maximum power output of 104.7 PS and peak torque of 138 Nm. The powertrain can be coupled to all four wheels with a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed torque converter automatic transferring power.
Jimmy has the ability to compete against the second generation Mahindra Thar after coming into the lifestyle SUV segment and it will be interesting to see how it is stacked against its rival if MSIL decides to launch the model, a mid -Sized MIVs as co. Also known as underdeveloped to work with Toyota.
