This rule is coming into force from January 2021. From April 2021, fastags will also be necessary for third party insurance. About 1.5 crores FASTag has been sold so far. Fastags is mandatory for registration since 2017.
FASTag is required for the fitness certificate of transport vehicles. If you have bought your car before December 1, 2017, then it will be mandatory for you to take FASTags from next year. Fastags is already mandatory for new vehicles. Also, FASTags has been made mandatory for taking 3rd party insurance.
1. What is FASTag-
Fastag is an electronic toll collection technique. It uses radio frequency identification (RFID). This tag is placed on the windscreen of the vehicle. As soon as your vehicle approaches the toll plaza, the sensor on the toll plaza tracks the fastags on the windscreen of your vehicle.
After this, the fee levied on that toll plaza is deducted from your FastTag account. In this way, you are able to pay the fee without stopping at the toll plaza. This tag installed in the vehicle will start its work as soon as your prepaid account is activated. At the same time, when the amount of your Fastags account is exhausted, you will have to recharge it again.
2. Where to get FASTag-
FASTags can be purchased offline from the bank by visiting any point of sale (POS) location. However, it is easy to apply online for long queues and save time. However, the procedure for applying FASTags varies slightly in different banks.
Nevertheless, the main things about the application remain the same. You will get SMS and email alerts for all your FASTags transactions.
3. FASTag prepaid account opening process-
To open a FASTag prepaid account, visit the bank’s online FASTag application website. For an online application for a FASTag account, it is not necessary to have a relationship with the bank.
Fill in personal details like name, address, date of birth, mobile number, email id, etc. Enter KYC document details (driving license, PAN card, passport, voter ID card, or Aadhaar card). Enter vehicle registration details. Vehicle registration refers to the vehicle registration certificate (RC) number. Upload a scanned copy of all required documents. These include KYC documents, 1 passport size photo of the vehicle owner, and RC.
4. How to check FASTag balance-
Every bank has a FASTag portal, where you can log in and check your account balance. The login process is different for every bank but once you log in, you can see your account details.
5. You can also know balance from missed call alert here
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a ‘missed call alert facility’ for users to check FASTag balance. Those who have registered their mobile number with NHAI prepaid wallet can check the balance by giving a missed call on toll-free number + 91-8884333331. Users who have added their FASTags to other prepaid wallets will not be able to take advantage of this feature
